For the longest time people have been told so many things about what they can and can’t wear. Only men wear suits, only girls wear dresses, and so on, but over time people have started to re-write these rules.
Gender Bending Fashion rewrites the rules of fashion, and changes the expectations of who can wear what. People should be able to wear what they want. Clothing is one way people can express themselves, and show a part of them. Some unofficial rules of what girls and boys wear should not stop others fashion choices.
Some brands that have started to make their clothes without gender, in their mind, are Calvin Klein, One DNA and more. One DNA focuses on having Unisex clothes while still making fashion statements. Calvin Klein jumped on the train of Gender Equality by signing a Women’s Empowerment Principle in 2017. As a well known brand, they wanted to promote diversity, inclusion, and equality to all, while also creating a standard for all brands. Believe it or not, gender bending fashion has been around for a long time, the only thing was it didn't really have a name yet, and people were not really in favor of it. In previous years, men and women tried breaking gender norms in fashion by wearing heels or pants, but most of society did not accept that .
Many in the past had worn clothes that “belonged” to the other gender. Choosing to dress like this came with different experiences. Some may have lost something, while others got some comments on what they were wearing. Joan the Arc’s male attire caused controversy, and it resulted in her execution in 1431. Many activists and public figures have worn clothes as a statement, and/or a way to break this idea of gendered fashion.
When someone is wearing a piece of clothing, they should feel comfortable, confident, and loved in what they wear. No one should judge someone on how they dress. Everyone has their own style and clothes they like to wear and that is great. If people wear what they want to and not what others want them to wear that's their choice. Gender bending fashion/ gender neutral fashion, is still rising today. If you go out in the world you want to be able to see diversity in clothing, and clothing that represents someone.
