2020. The year of chaos. From COVID-19 to a frightening election, there has been something on everyone’s mind all of the time. Despite these overwhelming times, the color palette for fashion recently has been quite neutral, which has been comforting. From brown to sage green, to the beige trend set from Paris Fashion week in Autumn 2019, these colors have been seen everywhere this season. They have been seen in fashion blogs such as Pinterest and in brands, such as Brandy Melville and Urban Outfitters. But why all of a sudden have colors that are considered subjectively “boring,” become one of the biggest fashion trends in 2020?
It all began with the reintroduction of beige into the fashion world in 2019. By moving away from extravagant logos and implementing more neutral colors into their collections, brands attempted to simplify their image. Before all of this, brands were seen as unimaginative, with little to work with, and un-empowering. But now, fashion is pushing away from big logos and moving towards being more clean and minimalistic. The top colors of autumn 2020/2021, which were determined from New York Fashion Week 2020, are light pink, beige, brown, green, sage, and other neutral colors. These colors have been demonstrated in fast fashion, sustainable fashion, as well as luxury brands.
The color brown is the big star of fashion recently. It has been worn in different patterns and garments. From brown leather jackets, to corduroy brown pants, to even knee-high brown boots, there have been many ways to wear this color. Unlike other colors, brown is able to be worn in a monochromatic way without overpowering the whole look, leading to even more options and ways to style it. Blue, on the other hand, which was named color of 2020 in the beginning of the year, doesn’t allow for the same toned down, monochromatic look that brown does. The color brown also gives a vintage hue, which could be another reason for why it is so popular, as vintage style has become sought after among the younger generation.
A color that matches well with brown is sage green. Seen all over Pinterest, this color has been taking Gen Z by storm. Just like brown, it is a neutral color that does not give off an overwhelming feeling when you see a complete monochromatic outfit made out of it. But why sage green? Well, because of its variety of shades, sage green is able to match with any skin tone, as well as match well with a lot of other neutral colors. Sage green is a chic look that is also comforting. Outside of fashion, sage green and other neutral colors have been seen in home decor, creating a reassuring and soothing atmosphere.
A few honorable mentions for neutral colors are light pink, grey-ish blue, light purple. You can never go wrong with the basic neutral colors, like black, white, and grey. They go well with most pieces, and are a staple in everyone’s closet. These neutral colors and fashion trends have been a useful outlet for those trying to cope with the world around us, especially in this hectic year.
